THOMAS THE APOSTLE CEMETERY 5635 BERKSHIRE VALLEY ROAD ADJACENT TO THE CHURCH OAK RIDGE, NEW JERSEY 07438 Joan Castrignano, 64 years, of Oak Ridge, NJ, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 17, 2025 at Holy Name Medical Center in Teaneck, NJ. She was born on January 5, 1961 in Newark, NJ, to the late Catherine (nee Flynn) and the late Edward Aslund. Joan was a lifelong resident of Oak Ridge, a community she dearly loved and served throughout her life. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by her family and friends. She cherished hosting gatherings, opening her home and heart to others, giving back to her community, and faithfully serving as a parishioner and CCD teacher at St. Joseph’s Parish in West Milford. Her faith was not only something she believed in, it was something she lived every day. It goes without saying that Joan possessed a rare and genuine kindness, one that made others feel truly seen, loved, and cared for. Those fortunate enough to know her often spoke of the warmth, comfort, and peace she brought into their lives simply by being present. Her laughter was contagious; you always knew when Joan was in the room, because her joy filled the space around her. One of Joan’s greatest passions was dance, a love that began in childhood and stayed with her throughout her life. She pursued this passion by dancing in renowned shows that toured around the world. In the early 2000’s, Joan fulfilled another dream by owning and operating her own dance studio in Oak Ridge, where she inspired countless local students through her love of movement, creativity, and self-expression. Never one to stop learning or giving, Joan later returned to school to earn her bachelor’s degree in education and became an elementary school teacher. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to nurturing young minds, teaching with patience, creativity, and compassion; qualities that defined every part of her life. Joan’s faith and love for others was a guiding light throughout her life. She now rests peacefully in the loving arms of the Lord. She was predeceased by her beloved parents, Edward Aslund in1985 and Catherine Aslund in 2007. Joan is survived by her beloved husband, John E. Castrignano; her cherished children, Vienna Castrignano, John A. Castrignano, and Matthew Castrignano, and her future son-in-law Edward Goldmann; her loving siblings Edward Aslund and Janice Correia; her dear mother-in-law Anita Castrignano; her dear in-laws, Anthony and Lisa Castrignano, Debbie and Louis Benaquista, and Paul and Rosanna Castrignano; and her beloved nieces and nephews—Sara Castrignano, Louis Benaquista, Anthony Benaquista, Mike Benaquista, Adrienne Benaquista, Christina Correia, Jessica Alder, David Castrignano, Antonio Correia, and Paul Castrignano—along with many extended family members and dear friends who will forever hold her memory in their hearts. The family will receive visitors on Monday, December 29, 2025 from 3pm to 7pm at the Stickle-Soltesz Funeral Home, 187 La Rue Road, Newfoundland, NJ 07435. The funeral mass will take place on Tuesday, December 30, 2025 at 11am at St. Joseph’s Church, 454 Germantown Road, West Milford, NJ 07480. The interment will follow at St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery, 5635 Berkshire Valley Road, Oak Ridge, NJ 07438, adjacent to the church.
